Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the Greek painters active in Georgia from the 14th to 17th centuries, whose presence is attested by inscriptions accompanying church murals. They are referred to either in their “signatures” or in donor inscriptions. Painters’ “signatures” make up a rather diverse group of inscriptions. While commonly written in Greek, a number of Georgian inscriptions mentioning Greek artists have also been preserved. The inscriptions provide scarce yet important information about the Greek painters. The author brings together evidence regarding the Greek painters and analyses the significance and function of the painters’ inscriptions, as well as the interaction between the inscriptions and their beholders, and how the Greek inscriptions were perceived by the local audience.
