Summary/Abstract: The Turkish - Orthodox Patriarchate played a decisive role in the formation of relations between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Turkish State as well as in influencing the occasional governmental politics against the Greek Orthodox minority of Constantinople. The Ankara government introduced a bill for establishing an independent Turkish Orthodox Church, and it acted to effectuate this, particularly after the election of Meletios Metaxakis in the Patriarchal See at the end of the year 1921. Efthymios Karachissaridis, known also as Papa Efthymios, the representative of the Metropolitan in the community of Keskinmaden, played a leading role in this scheme.
