Summary/Abstract: Starting from the Canossa conflict between the papacy and the imperial power in 1077, a paradigm of the conflict between the Church and secular power, this paper aims at illustrating (by returning in time and space) the conflict between St. John Chrysostom and the secular imperial power of his time. St. John’s sufferings emerged from the moral conflicts with various representatives of the political and ecclesiastical elite of his time, but also from the structural Byzantine difference of the meaning of the Church and the State metaphysics, finally resumed in the relationship pattern between Church and Emperor. The message of St. John Chrysostom about this relationship is that the Church must always show to the world that the truth of the Gospel cannot be perceived truncated or lived truncated. The attitude of St. John Chrysostom demonstrates until the end of time that theology is always able to fulfill its pastoral task.
