Summary/Abstract: COVID-19 and the new social communication protocols sparked a heated discussion on the essence of the theater. For some people, the physical presence is an indispensible part of the theater, as well as having a common space for watching it. For this category, the adaptation of the theater to the pandemic conditions (readings, archive shows placed on online platforms, as well as new shows, accommodated to the lockdown circumstances) are just a necessary albeit a temporary exercise, a reference point on the segment of returning to the normality of physical presence. For others, such an attitude seems to ignore the inventive responses of theater artists who have shown that a public building is not an absolute necessity for the show to go on. Many artists have managed to create innovative works online long before the pandemic. In a world dominated by COVID-19, where the shows have been forced to migrate to the online space to survive, the live theater has found creative ways to adapt. So did the audience.
