Summary/Abstract: The text deals with the question if the European identity exists as an unique concept or it must be considered in its plurality and diversity. It points up the key moments in the history when the tendency for unifying the European heritage was shown and the building of common identity was evident. In these frame the history of European literature is perceived as an controversial project. The discipline of comparative literature might be a solution for the contemporary historical discourses of literature but only if it surpasses the Eurocentric position known in the past. It is far away from the ideas for “grand narratives” and it is based on the principle of inclusion and cosmopolitanism.
