Summary/Abstract: Biology stands in a central position astride a great intellectual chasm that has defi ned the Western science since the Enlightenment. On one side there is the shiny clean edifi ce of the physical sciences, that has as its foundation the three pillars of mathematics, physics, and chemistry. On the other side there is a tangled jungle of ideas constituting the social sciences and humanities, whose every trunk and shoot is rooted in a muddy humus of feelings, representations, purposes, and values.
