Summary/Abstract: In this paper the emphasis is put on the role of the reader in the existence of the literature phenomena. Some influential theoretical concepts are quoted to show how the importance of the reader as a subject in the process of reading is crucial in the „fate“ of one literary work. As examples are analyzed two contemporary novels, very popular in Macedonian and Czech literatures. These are The Dialogue with Spinoza by Goce Smilevski (2002) and Shadow of the Cathedral by Milosh Urban (2003). The two novels are written and published in the new millennia and they approve the expectation of an active reader’s position and his/her wider cultural and literary competence.
