Summary/Abstract: We are faced with competences daily. However, the term is often incorrectly interpreted and applied. The reason for this is the absence of an universally accepted definition or theory. To understand the concept of competencies better I presented its important definitions. The concept of competence in public administration is introduced very slowly, while in Slovenia it has not yet defined the catalog of core competencies, which can help potential employers find the most suitable candidate for the job. This paper presents the results of research on the development and coordination skills of graduates with the expectations of employers, which was created as part of an empirical thesis. The survey covered the 84 graduates and 28 administrative units (48.8%), 41 municipalities (19.4%) and 5 ministries (27.7%). Research has shown that there is a gap between the need for certain competencies by employers and the acquisition of these competencies in the course of education. The required level of competence is a lot higher than the level of acquired skills.
