Summary/Abstract: This article concerns Maximilien Robespierre’s famous speech entitled Report drawn up on behalf of the Committee of Public Safety on the relationship between religious and moral ideas and republican principles, and on national holidays, delivered in the forum of the French National Convention on May 7, 1794. This speech is an expression of Robespierre’s new conception of both the French Revolution and the Republic itself, which was henceforth to be based on virtue, altruism, and care that every republican citizen ought to show towards all other members of the French national community. The cement of this altruism and care promoted by Robespierre was the cult of the Supreme Being, which by giving the Revolution new energy was to take it to an unprecedented metaphysical level.
