Summary/Abstract: This study aims to introduce the cultural system of Mezőkövesd through contemporary perspectives which are provided by a coherent framework of structures of opposition and their contexts localized in the conceivability of the urban culture. By the representative function of motif treasure regarding the dimensions of historical and practical analysis, I will present the historical role of folk art and local elite in the development of high culture while also taking cultural memory and contexts into consideration. Then, through the example of a few local cultural phenomena, I will thoroughly analyse the contemporary ways of preserving traditions and the possibilities of coexistence between elite and popular culture. The sections related to musical life may shed light on the effects of popular urban objects and their practices in public education, in relation to the foremost principles of high musical culture. The conclusion of the study will present the pedagogical implications of the research results with the help of the local curriculum of the Szent László Grammar School of Mezőkövesd, thus offering a broader perspective on the teaching of regional culture. I think that the main result of my research is in the use of cultural science aspects that can be applied at the local level, in the recognition of the constructive effect of the system of opposition and cultural memory. I firmly believe that my dissertation can initiate discourses problematizing the effective teaching of regional culture.
