Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes Japanese geography books, newspapers, and travelogue from 1861 to 1878 and discusses their views on Herzegovina and the uprising against the Ottoman Empire there. This was when Japan ended its long isolation and began to pay attention to the foreign situation. For the Japanese at that time, the uprising in Herzegovina was regarded as an event that threatened the Ottoman Empire and shook the international order, or as a liberation struggle by the South Slavs oppressed by the Ottoman Empire.
