Epistemological preliminaries for a theory of crisis

Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author questions Samuel Huntington`s thesis on the fact that each wave or stream of democratization was generally followed by an ebb-tide of democratization. The question, which is more and more often put by scientists in the field, is whether the new world economic crisis is or not an expression of this ebb-tide, whose effects will bring forth the end of the capitalist era and of liberal democracies. Along the article, the author analyses the crises and the recessions that democracies encountered in time, reaching in the end the conclusion that there is no other option but wait for this crisis to end, in order to be able to explain it. Still, we have in hand the possibility of foreseeing its evolution on the basis of fragmentary illustrations and bygone teachings.
