Summary/Abstract: The article addresses problematic (as far as the codification of the standard Lithuanian language is concerned) derivatives with the suffix -ietis, -ė, reveals the relationship between the codified norms and the trends in the contemporary usage of these derivatives. Five groups of derivatives with the suffix -ietis, -ė are discussed on the basis of the formal and semantic attributes of their derivational base. The key moments in the development of the codification of the derivatives with the suffix -ietis, -ė are identified and the factors that determine the instability of the norms of these derivatives and the course of their transformation are specified. A number of potential solutions to altering the codification are suggested to minimise the resulting contrast between the codified norm and usage. The article lays the foundations for further in-depth research grounded on the structured attributes of the derivatives with the suffix -ietis, -ė and the highlighted problems of codification.
