Selected Pragmatic Functions of the Operator nie wiem in Polish Spoken Language (A Corpus Analysis)

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an analysis of the expression nie wiem as a metatextual operator in Polish spoken language. The author sets out to search for features indicating a metatextual use of this expression, and compares it with a mental predicate occurring in the same grammatical form. The main focus of the paper is a description of the pragmatic functions of nie wiem with respect to operators organizing the statement and references to the statement. Additionally, the functions of the filled pause are overviewed.
