Summary/Abstract: It was established around the year 1020 at the Lower Danube by emperor Basileios II (976-1025), the Theme Paristrion (Paradunavon) played an important part in the empire’s Danubian policy in the 11th-12th centuries. Its two century history also records, besides the well-known aspects, a series of controversial moments insufficiently elucidated. Such a moment was represented by the rule of the generals Basileios Apokapes and Nikephoros Botaneiates from 1064-1065. Some historians are to identify Basileios Apokapes as governor at the Lower Danube others Nikephoros Botaneiates. The rule of the two generals was an associated one as a result of the strong Uzes invasion.
