Summary/Abstract: Cultural heritage safeguarding and enhancing has long been recognized as one of the most important tasks of the European Union. This task requires coordinated action of all EU bodies, as well as Member States. In this regard, the Council of the European Union in May 2014 adopted the Conclusions recognizing cultural heritage as a strategic resource for a sustainable Europe. By analyzing the Conclusions, the authors point to the importance of protecting cultural heritage, as one of the most important aspects of national identities and the identity of Europe itself. Although the conclusions and proposals are not binding on the Republic of Serbia, their incorporation into the positive law of Serbia in the field of cultural heritage, would facilitate the process of harmonization of the Republic of Serbia with the European Union, which is specifically pointed in the paper.
