Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the responses of pope Nicholas I to the questions of the Bulgarians A.D. 866. While this extraordinary source has been discussed in detail by scholars in the last decades and centuries, the paper concentrates on a specific detail: the knowledge about specific customs of the Roman church before the Bulgarian embassy to Rome in August in 866 A.D. Some answers reveal that the Bulgarians formulated their questions with certain expectations in mind, especially concerning regulations, which were implemented following the advice by the Byzantine clerics. These expectations were obviously the result of previous knowledge, which was transmitted orally in the course of contacts and interactions with Western missionaries. Some of these expectations were disappointed. The first steps for the final decision against Rome, which was finally taken in 870, might have started much earlier.
