Summary/Abstract: One particularly important phenomenon of European culture perceived by Hellas is the idea of the paideia – the pursuit through education, cultivation and virtues of knowing the world and the place of man in it. This idea is the basis of European mentality over the centuries and has shaped the modern worldview to this day. The Church Fathers of Christianity created the models in which ancient culture and science fit in as an essential element of Christian teaching. They formulate the idea of the Christian paideia – the formation of man as a developed person, through self-perfection, education and a virtuous life until the theosis – and the likeness of the God-man (θεάνθρωπος) – of Christ. The Christian paideia was accepted in Bulgaria – on the one hand as the philosophical basis of education and medieval science, on the other in the irrational through hesychasm. Bulgarian medieval science and education interact directly with the Byzantine culture, perceiving and processing it according to their specificity, language and traditions. At the heart of this transmission is the concept of Christian paideia, which shapes the thinking, morality and worldview of the medieval man. Medieval Bulgarian scholars and writers have fulfilled the crucial mission of adapting Christian universal values to the mentality and vitality of the new European peoples of Eastern Europe.
