Summary/Abstract: Vast troves of contemporary information from Byzantine documentary sources about everyday life, political attitudes, social relations and, among other things, self-perception and identity-related issues, remain still insufficiently studied in scholarship. The paper explores the first-rate value of documents as sources for better understanding of the private aspects of life in the late Byzantine Empire and post-Byzantine Balkans, emphasizing especially the mentions of current political realities in documents written at the turbulent times of great political changes in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
