Summary/Abstract: The influence that classical culture – or even its reinterpretation – has had on German thought is certainly known. Its influence has notoriously been a counterbalance to romanticism, often and subsequently also crossing with it, as the beautiful pages of George Mosse (2015) remind us. However, it is with Hegel that Greek thought and Mediterranean civilization become part of the overall philosophical reasoning, outlined in their specificity and studied in greater depth in their history, according to that very particular fusion of events, ideas and geographical determinants that the nineteenth century conceived.
