Summary/Abstract: While Russia has always played a significant role with regard to Europe, relations took on a new dimension after the EU’s last expansion. Not only because the EU’s border was substantially extended eastwards, but also because the ten new Member States have a very special relationship with Russia due to their long and often forced co-existence. Now Western Europe has access to expertise based on not only theoretical assumptions, but also on practical experience. This advantage, if used properly, could benefit the entire EU and contribute to creating a sound and effective plan of cooperation with Russia.
