Summary/Abstract: The history of colonialism and the long interaction with the West in which the key political and economic institutions – the nation state and market capitalism – were introduced from without, the large white population that settled in South Africa from the seventeenth century onwards, and a black middle class steeped in Western influ¬nces, produced a complex relationship between South Africa and the West.
