Summary/Abstract: Cohesion Policy is one of the earliest common policies of the European Union whose main objective lies in promoting the harmonious development of the community and reducing inequalities in the level of development of various regions and backwardness of the least developed regions. After explaining its basic concepts, this paper provides an overview of the emergence and development of the European Union’s cohesion policy; then, it points to its importance, challenges and future trends and perspectives for the Republic of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to emphasize that the European Union’s cohesion policy is not the only driving force of progress, but it only supports and complements the effects of free market and economic policies of the member states. Only together with other European and national policies, with good national macroeconomic policies and a good response of each member state to the offered economic opportunities within the European Union, cohesion policy can achieve satisfactory results and increase the positive impact of other policies.
