Summary/Abstract: The article studies identity formation among Bulgarians in Bessarabia region. The author uses historical as well as an anthropological approach. The community’s behavior usually is a reflection of the central or local state policy. Present research is an attempt to describe the strategies directed towards preservation of Bulgarian community in Bessarabia. Its behavior could not be understood without outlining the basic characteristics of Bulgarians as a political and ethnic community before their migration and the most important power relations, imposed on these communities by the political power in the Russian Empire and USSR. In this context the author focuses on some of the most important identity markers such as endonyms, language, personal and family names, historical memory, marriage and inheritance, religion, cultural tradition as well as the impact of the state power and its institutions on them.
