Summary/Abstract: Róbert Csaba Szabó’s article examines how the Bolyai cult was reconsidered in the theatrical memory of the town of Târgu Mureş after the political and cultural opening that started in Romania in 1968. According to the author, the evolution of the Bolyai cult after 1968 had its roots in the celebrations in honour of the Bolyais organized in 1956-57 and the erection of the Bolyai statue, but the formation of the image emphasizing the father-son relationship between the scientists was also strongly shaped by the theatrical memory in Târgu Mureş. The article points out the functioning of cultural memory through the analysis of the public statue erected in Marosvásárhely, László Németh’s play The Two Bolyais, and the performance thereof directed by Ferenc Kovács.
