Summary/Abstract: What is theoretically innovative and politically crucial is the need to think beyond narratives of originary and initial subjectivities and to focus on those moments or processes that are produced in the articulation of cultural differences. My paper starts from Victor Turner's model of social drama and discusses liminality, viewed as transition between cultures and ultimately reflective of cultural shock, and suggests possible reloadings of the term in a larger contemporary context.
