Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to comment on the way in which the passage of time, a central theme in the work of the British writer Penelope Lively, is approached in her novel City of the Mind and is given a palpable representation in the description of the city of London. Further references to the metropolis as a place of contrasts will be made, references related to the depiction of the city as a place of promise and threat, the city as a place of diversity/ difference where the Other is either destroyed or appropriated, the city as an object of imagination.
