Summary/Abstract: The social-psychological aspects of Malinowski’s concept of phatic communion – instincts and sentiments – are referred by secondary sources to the works of William McDougall and Alexander Shand. These thinkers however don’t elaborate upon these aspects of phatic communion, and sometimes even contradict Malinowski. This paper shows how Malinowski relied, with regard to instincts and sentiments, on Edward Alsworth Ross’s book Principles of Sociology, which also explains some other inexplicable aspects of Malinowski’s phatic communion, e.g. the communion of food and the selfishness that characterizes phatic communion, or why participants in such an exchange of words talk in turns but only pretend to listen.
