Summary/Abstract: The historical evolution of the Greeks is linked to the state of affairs within the Ottoman Empire. As the Greek intellectuals’ undertakings to stir the national conscience were tethered by the watchful Ottoman authorities and the Constantinople Patriarchy, the national freedom movement moved and weighed more heavily outside Greek borders. The most important initiatives were carried through within the Romanian Principalities, the Habsburg Empire and Russia.
