Summary/Abstract: In this paper Venantius Fortunatus’ consolation for the death of Galswinth, a Visigoth princess married into the Merovingian family, is analysed. According to Gregory of Tours, Galswinth was killed at the behest of her husband, and this incident led to another civil war among the Merovingian rulers. Fortunatus does not mention any of the violent details, which had been interpreted as the sign of the caution of the aulic poet. However, the references to Vergil and Claudian’s De raptu Proserpinae lead to a different interpretation.
