Summary/Abstract: The only available primary source on Post-Byzantine painters in the areas under Ottoman domination are their signatures. In the present essay, we deal with a number of issues revolving around this subject: I. Why do some painters leave all their works unsigned? II. Why do some painters sign only a few of their works? III. Why do some painters make their existence known through an “alternative” self-reference? ΙV. Why do some painters sign in more than one way? In any case, different psychological or social factors seem to play a role in the attitude of the icon painter towards his own signature.
