Summary/Abstract: The fact that the Lisbon Treaty did not mention Christianity as a root of the European Union‟s institutional construction does not mean that the Christian content of the European spirituality has been canceled. The Christian roots of the European spirituality, together with Greek and Latin culture, is almost unanimously recognized and proven by a history of Europe in which the real lives of its peoples has kept and cultivated Christianity, building a value system which has given Europe identity, unity and endurance, including pilgrimage networks, religious orders, Crusades, schools and universities, Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, Greek and Latin books, as well as the values that are drawing together a unified society, organized and led by the principle of subsidiarity. Despite a modernity that has separated state and politics from religion, it is precisely in the name of religion that Christian democracy has been developing. Through the application of neo-thomism and personalism, this political movement could allow Europe - worn with crisis and wars - to put to work an institutional system that is unique in history.
