The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Current Theological Debate. The Contribution of Father Dumitru Stăniloae

Summary/Abstract: The Sacrifice and Resurrection of Christ is the foundation of all the Mysteries, but this foundation is put in a special light by the Eucharist, as an update, by the power of the Holy Spirit, of the essential saving acts of Christ. Through His Sacrifice and Resurrection, which become accessible to all people in the Eucharist of the Church, Jesus Christ draws the members of His Mysterious Body, the Church, to share in them and live them existentially in the life of the Church and the world. In this paper I present Father Staniloae’s teaching on the place and significance of the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the context of the other Sacraments of the Church, and how it relates to each of them. The common foundation of all the Sacraments is highlighted, but then the specificity of each of them was underlined, and the relation of this specificity to the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
