Summary/Abstract: The religion of the Roman Empire during Constantine the Great‟ reign was characterized by worshiping several gods in the Roman pantheon, focusing on nature worship and exacerbated sexuality. „Sacred‟ prostitution was widely spread in the entire Empire, sex being considered a mode of consecration by representing a union with the gods worshiped by the Empire‟s inhabitants. The Edict of Milan, issued after the meeting between Constantine the Great and Licinius, offered the possibility to Christianity to express freely, Roman paganism losing ts "de jure" dominance. The direct purpose of the Edict, as a legal act, was not to change the manifestations specific to the pagan hedonistic environment, but it fundamentally marked the spread of Christianity which, by its teaching and morals represses this sinful lifestyle. The Edict of Milan opened the possibility of human spiritual victory over human flesh, allowing metanoia.
