Summary/Abstract: The chapter on desire (Begierde) in the Phenomenology of the Spirit accomplishes the transition from the theoretical section to the practical one. After having clarified problems of knowledge, Hegel turns to clarifying the problems of action. The desire appears as suspended between nature and history, as somehow an effect of nature and a cause of history. The importance of this segment lies in the speculative unification, in the same point, of the theoretical side with the practical side. The purpose of this research is to unveil the ontological character of desire, in opposition to the merely transcendental interpretation. This will be obvious though showing the dependency of desire from the substance of the universal Life – before advancing to the superior degrees of the desire for recognition.
