Summary/Abstract: The present reflections are devoted to the political and ideological circumstances of the compilation of the so-called Codex of Baltazar Behem, a richly-illuminated cartulary of the municipal council of the city of Cracow from the early years of the 16th century. According to the main argument of the article, the codex was made in 1503–1505 as the foundation of the Cracow city council and expressed the official urban ideology of power. The ideological programme of the codex was at the same time a response to political challenges resulting from the reform of state political system under King Alexander Jagiellon.
