Summary/Abstract: Józef Piłsudski did not leave behind any written, verbalised and legible indications of how Poland would function in the international environment. During his time in power, he and his adherents made only assumptions about the need for Poland to function in conditions of independence and sovereignty in the international arena and about the necessity of attempts to shape the Republic’s immediate environment to limit Russian and German influence in Central and Eastern Europe. The principle remained unchanged regardless of the growing disproportions between the Republic and its most prominent neighbours. The Marshal’s idea of Poland’s position was brought about by his ideological heirs: before WWII by Józef Beck and later by Ignacy Matuszewski. However, none of these politicians questioned Piłsudski’s assessment of challenges and threats or proposed instruments for building the foundations of a regional security system. Beck’s and Matuszewski’s ideas differed from Piłsudski’s in their territorial scale and the involvement of those entities that the Marshal had omitted in his calculations.
