Summary/Abstract: Kultur-Lige was a Yiddishist league of artists and cultural leaders, set up in the Ukraine in 1917. Its main objective was to develop modern secular Jewish culture and shape cultural habits of Jewish masses by establishing schools, libraries, amateur drama and music groups and publishing books. The rapid growth of Kultur-Lige in the Ukraine stalled in 1920. When the Soviet regime banned its operations, the group moved to Poland, hoping to resume their work. Kultur-Lige endeavored to rebuild the network of its institutions but the political situation prevented it from acting independently, without having to join existing Jewish political parties. Therefore many key Kultur-Lige figures got involved in the educational activities of the Central Jewish School Organization (TsYShO), associated with the Bund party. The article looks at the impact of Kultur-Lige’s original educational project on TsYShO operations in Poland, bases on an analysis of articles printed in Warsaw in Kultur-Lige pamphlets and in Shul un Lebn periodical in the years 1921–1926. Despite the fact that this meant abandoning a sizeable portion of the original goals, Kultur-Lige members continued to rebuild their vision and adjusted it to the changing circumstances.
