Summary/Abstract: In 2020, a human resource research group consisting of researchers from the Estonian Military Academy and the University of Tartu conducted research on the different perspectives of the Estonian conscription system and conscripts. First, we elaborated the role and position of the Estonian Defence Forces in the framework of the military covenant, the social contract, and social cohesion (Study I), and analysed the conscription system in the context of social transformations (Study II). Second, we focused on how competences are converted between the civilian and the military field from the perspective of conscripts and employers (Study III). Third, we carried out an annual conscription survey, asking approximately 3,000 conscripts about their attitudes, motivation, health, and satisfaction with the military service in the beginning and in the end of the conscript service.
