Summary/Abstract: An old village of Bukovina, the Giurgiu’s boyar yard, Frătăuții Vechi village has shaped its geographical personality over the years, under the historical evolution of Moldavia and Bukovina, but especially by the impulse of the contemporary society’s metamorphoses. The land use represents an ancestral form of the materialization of symbiotic relationships between man and local natural conditions, conditions which were reconfigured over time according to the intentions and needs of society. The purpose of this current scientific approach is to reconstruct the way in which the land is used and its landscape history from the geographical area of the Frătăuții Vechi village over the last 163 years (1855–2018). In order to accomplish this objective, we appealed to the geographical research of old and new cartographic documents, which have been processed with the help of the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) techniques with a benchmark of three years, specific to different historical-geographical contexts: 1855 for the period of Austrian administration, 1978 for the socialist period and 2018 for the capitalist period. The obtained results highlight the territorial distribution of the land use categories according to the natural and social-economic factors, which influenced the dynamics of land use with different frequencies and intensities during the 163 years. The diachronic analysis of land use dynamics proves itself to be helpful for the better understanding of historical development of the landscape, thus substantiating the adoption and implementation of the best land management strategies and measures in the context of sustainable rural development.
