Summary/Abstract: Although more than a hundred years have passed since the birth of physician Octavian Gheorghian, the creator of modern Maternity Hospital in Czernowitz, his name is mentioned in connection with the process of improving the health system in Bukovina at the beginning of the 20th century. As a renowned surgeon and obstetrician in medical circles, he built his career through perseverance and dedication. He was concerned with the organization of the institutional framework and the training of medical personnel (doctors, midwives, „health agents”, and nurses) and understood the needs of the epoch he lived in. Without addressing the political side of his activity (knowing that he contributed to the unification of Bukovina with Romania in 1918), this article aims to reveal the formative path and professional achievements of Dr. Octavian Gheorghian as reflected in publications and periodicals from the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. The moments of reference during his becoming a physician, the social stimuli, the opportunities for affirmation, and the recognition coming from contemporaries and posterity are underlined.
