Summary/Abstract: The Valeryan Self is a simple condition of knowledge which serves to ensure the unity of consciousness. Empty and unknowable, it is almost identical to Kant’s transcendental subject. Under the impulse of his nihilistic inclination, Valery denies this influence and ends up destroying the unity of his ego by carrying out multiple divisions.
