Peasant Readers of Gazeta Świąteczna and Their Egophotographs (1881–1905)

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyse the self-identifications of the peasant readers of Gazeta Świąteczna from a visual perspective. The source material consists of readers’ letters to Gazeta Świąteczna from 1881–1905, photographs from the readers’ collection of Gazeta Świąteczna kept by the National Library in Warsaw, as well as letters and photographs of Gazeta readers published in Zorza in the years 1887–1905. The main aim of the article is to answer the question of how peasant readers of the folk press presented themselves through photography. The text proposes to consider the photographs as a kind of egodocument. The material was analysed using the microhistoric method (case studies of selected peasant readers).
