Summary/Abstract: Botanist and Evangelical lyceum director of Sopron Johann Christoph Deccard (1686–1764) represented the figure of the European protestant intellectual who was well-known and highly appreciated even beyond his narrower homeland in the first half of the 18 the century. The years of his lyceum directorship mean the first period of his career, and his scientific work really began to evolve after that. The central figure within Deccard’s scientific relations was the director of the Evangelical Lyceum of Pozsony (Bratislava), scientist and polymath of European fame Mátyás Bél (1684–1749). The two scientists were permanently corresponding to each other, and Deccard was elected as a member of the Latin Society of Jena by Bél’s proposal. The unique source of Deccard’s education and scientific activity is the list of books that is practically a hand-written catalog of the items about the history and ecclesiastical history of Hungary in his library.
