L’ AVENIR DES LANGUES
THE FUTURE OF LANGUAGES

Summary/Abstract: My presentation aims to analyze the linguistic future and the factors for the development of linguistic situations: demography, transmission, appropriation of languages resulting from colonization, urbanization, state policies, imperial expansion, vehicularity, new technologies. As for a vision of the linguistic situation of the world to come, perhaps, it will be said that no language will impose itself as universal, but all languages will be subdivided. Despite the fact that a liberating babelization may take hold, the influence of a language will no longer depend on the number of its speakers, but on the number and reputation of its masterpieces. We have to look for the keys that allow us to understand the great movements of languages.
