Summary/Abstract: When teaching Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther and its movie adaptation Goethe! / Young Goethe in Love to students at A1-B1 levels, teachers are facing the dilemma of finding a balance between lecturing literary and cultural studies and working on enhancing their students’ German skills. Thus lecturers need to find creative approaches to motivate learners. The present paper suggests exercises aiming at minimizing students’ fear of failure. Lecturers may use such exercises to make complex classics of literature palatable and comprehensible to learners at beginner levels.
