Summary/Abstract: The aim of my study is to put the single and only collection of poetry for children by Daisy Mrázková, titled Songs of the Ant Nanny (2009), into the context of her prose work. Another aim of the study is to document the lasting value and contribution of Mrázková´s books for child readers. I compare the Songs of the Ant Nanny with Mrázková’s prosaic texts both in terms of the poetics and in terms of the most important overlapping topics and recurring motifs. The author’s principal topics include: essential relationship to nature, respect for all living things, search for a relationship with others and oneself, desire for learning as well as searching for the meaning of life. First, I try to capture the poetics of the Songs of the Ant Nanny Collection and then I proceed to its interpretation. The texts are characterized by the possibility of multilevel interpretation, strong lyricism, non-violent didacticism and even philosophical depth. I also see some connection between the writer’s prose and her poetry in the poems and songs that she inserted into her fairy tales. Her own illustrations also constitute an integral part of her books for children. The abstract images stimulate children’s imagination to certain degree and – in a similar fashion as the poet’s texts invite children to cooperate in discovering and making their meaning. Compared to the illustrations in Mrázková´s prose works, the pictorial accompaniment of the author’s poems carries even higher degree of abstraction. Daisy Mrázková ‘s texts help children to search for basic human values, teach them to think critically and guide them through the world of primary, but the most essential philosophical questions.
