Summary/Abstract: The present study offers an incursion into the history of Russian modernism, in whose waters acmeism can be identified as a moderate current. At the time there were numerous disputes that consolidated the extremist wing of the avant-garde around post-symbolism. In contrast, Russian acmeism resurrected the formulas and values of the literary classics. The goal here is to identify and analyze the imagery and motifs of the classics as they appear in the lyrical texts of one of the most important Russian acmeists, Nikolay Gumilyov, a founder of this current. The aim is to come to terms with the paradoxical position of the Russian acmeists who wrote in the midst of this effervescent period in Russian literature.
