Summary/Abstract: When bharata-nātyam artist Rama Vaidyanathan stages and interprets Ardhanareśvara, she plays the rôle of the divine Śiva in its half-male, half-female form. She takes codes of mythology from ancient texts of Hinduism and an artistic vision of the genders. The study of Ardhanareśvara will allow us to illuminate the staging of the androgynous divine figure by a contemporary artist of bharata- nātyam.
