Summary/Abstract: Professor Kurczewski's discussion of Podgórecki's legal sociology presents a vision of the discipline as a facilitator of social engineering. The present paper offers an alternative vision, one rooted entirely in the values of scientific theory. Such a theory already exists: Donald Black's pure sociology of law. Pure sociology explains the handling of legal cases with their location and direction in a multi-dimensional social space - their social structure or geometry. A general theoretical system, pure sociology explains social behaviour in a highly original manner, without reference to psychology, purposes, or even people as such. With its radically new subject matter (the behaviour of social life) pure sociology offers a fresh and owerful foundation for the continued development of the sociology of law.
